CONTEXT

INRIA, the national institute for research in computer science and control, is dedicated to fundamental and applied research in information and communication science and technology (ICST). The Institute has a workforce of 3,700, 2,900 of whom are scientists from INRIA and its partner organizations. INRIA has an annual budget of 162 million euros, 20% of which comes from its own research contracts and development products. INRIA develops many partnerships with industry and fosters technology transfer and company foundations in the field of ICST - some eighty companies have been funded. Startups are financed in particular by INRIA Transfert, a subsidiary of INRIA that supports four startup funds. The international collaborations are based on an incentive strategy of welcoming and recruiting foreign students as well as developing strong exchanges between research scientists. Priority is given to geographic zones with strong growth: Europe, Asia and North America while maintaining reasonable
cooperation with South America, Africa and Middle-East.

The goal of RMoD is to support remodularization of object-oriented applications. This objective is tackled from two complementary perspectives: reengineering and modularity constructs for programming languages. In the reengineering perspective we will propose new analyses to understand and restructure existing large applications (specialized package metrics, adapted visualizations, layer identifications). In the modularity construct context we will work on a pure trait-based language and new modular abstractions. We will also propose the definition of dedicated secure language constructs based on a modular and layered kernel as one direct application of modularization. These programming language constructs will be experimented on Pharo, a platform for dynamic web development. Pharo will be used as a testbed for a pure-traits language, which will be used to assess the impact of modular classes in terms of reuse orthogonally to inheritance.

SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT
Recently, traits have been proposed as a single inheritance backward compatible solution in which the composing entity has the control over the trait composition. Traits are fine-grained units used to compose classes, while avoiding many of inheritance and mixin-based approaches. To evaluate the expressiveness of traits, some hierarchies were refactored, showing code reuse. However, such large refactorings, while valuable, may not be facing all the problems, since the hierarchies were previously expressed within single inheritance and following certain patterns. In addition traits have always been considered in addition to class inheritance but not as the main composition and reuse mechanism.

Goals
We are in the process of designing a pure traits based language. We want to evaluate the impact of having only traits as building blocks and removing inheritance from an object-oriented language.

We expect the candidate to take part of the design of a pure traits-based programming language, to perform analysis on large piece of software for remodularisation purposes and redesign a library. We expect the candidate to implement the core of a pure trait-based language and some representative examples.

26 february 2009: Fulltime seaside position

We are getting ready to start the first steps of moving a mod_perl/perl based custom/home grown e-commerce system over to running on GLASS.
You would be devoted at least 95% of the time to said work because the rest of us would get pulled away from time to time and we want to keep this moving forward.
We are in love with Seaside and GLASS but need someone with experience to decrease our learning curve and become a valued member of the team.
This would be an ongoing, full time, telecommuting position.

16 february 2009 (Douai, France): Post-Doctoral Position on Open Dynamic Distributed Systems

CONTEXT
The position is open within the Informatics & Automatics Departement of the Ecole des Mines de Douai (France). The post-doc will join the informatics research team which works on component-based engineering and re-engineering for distributed and embedded systems. Examples of targeted applications are related to terrestrial transport systems, mobile robotics, and distributed computing.

Open Dynamic Distributed Systems is among topics we are interested in as part of the VerySmallTalk Project. By "Open" we mean a system that bears the addition of new devices or the deployment of new software. Characteristics of added devices or hardware are not known by system designers. Openness is also related to topology and characteristics of networks connecting devices. By "Dynamic" we mean systems that may evolve in a non-anticipated manner at run-time. New devices may join the system during its functioning. Symmetrically, a device being part of the system may "disappear" because of a failure, or a disconnection decided by a user. Moreover, changes occurring at run-time may affect also software and communication networks.

TASK
The post-doc will be assigned the study and the development of a software platform for open distributed systems. This platform will be assessed using concrete applications related to the VerySmalltalk project and particularly to scientific computing. The scientific computing application example is to be built for colleagues from the department of civil and environmental engineering (CEE). The starting point of this application is a set of scientific software that compute material physical properties. These software were developed in C by people from the CEE and partners and weren't meant to interact initially. The targeted platform should allow to address this issue and allow users to make computations involving at least two softwares. For instance, a hydration software may collaborate through the platform with an elasticity software in order to compute the evolution of elasticity according to hydration.

The platform to develop is actually a new version of UbiquiTalk. Besides distributed computing, UbiquiTalk targets applications in ubiquitous computing and multi-robot systems.

APPLICATION
Candidates should owe a PhD in a topic related to the position and particularly software engineering, and distributed systems. Mastering OO programming is mandatory.

We've a graduation position for the following project:

Title: "Domain descriptions & execution platforms"

1) Problem
Current dependencies between business domain descriptions and execution platform make our software product less flexible in using alternative execution platforms.

2) Research question
How to increase flexibility in using alternative execution platforms for our business domain descriptions?

3) Research goal
Research if and how our current business domain descriptions can be executed on an alternative execution platform (e.g. Java, Python).

4) Context
In our system the business domain is described in a high level of abstraction. The general idea is to enable our "business modelers" to describe their knowledge about the business domain within this high level of abstraction. They do not have to worry about all kinds of implementation aspects such as persistency, user interface technologies, classes, variables, referential integrity, etc, because the code for these technical aspects is automatically generated from the business domain descriptions.

The business domain descriptions, the code generators as well as most part of the generated code is expressed in the programming language Smalltalk (VisualWorks).

Even though we're very happy with our approach and with Smalltalk, we realize there are possibilities for a stricter boundary between business domain descriptions and execution platform. This will give us more flexibility in choosing different (potentially more interesting) deployment strategies.

A student could research if and how our current business domain model descriptions can be executed on an alternative execution platform (e.g. Java, Python). This research might conclude other platforms are not easily supported, because certain constructions in our current descriptions are to Smalltalk specific. In such a case, it should be made clear what the consequences are to remove the Smalltalk dependencies from our current business domain descriptions.

We are a small company (6 people, of which 5 developers). We believe our in-house base-technology R&D and our use of a dynamic and reflective development language (Smalltalk) help us being very successful in a competitive market. Since our start in the December 2005, we are focused on development and sales of one product: a people's skills & schedule management system for fire-, health care-, safety departments. More than 100 governmental institutions work daily with our web-based system.

One of our developers is a former computer science teacher with experience in assisting students for their graduation.
